Oliver Dixon was born on 5 November 1920, the son of Hamilton and Florence Mary Dixon. He joined the staff of District Bank at its Manchester Whitworth Street branch in November 1939, the day after his 19th birthday. In September 1940 he joined the Fleet Air Arm as a part-time volunteer whilst still working for the bank.
In August 1941 Dixon left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Navy. He was posted to HMS Grebe, a naval air station at Alexandria, Egypt. Sub-Lieutenant Dixon was reported missing on 23 July 1942 and subsequently presumed to have died on that day. He was 21 years old.
