Kenneth Darlow

Bank: Westminster Bank

Place of work: Ware branch

Died: 30 October 1943

Kenneth Owen Darlow was born on 18 February 1919, the only son of Mr and Mrs LM Darlow. He was educated at Hitchin Grammar School, where he was a house captain. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in March 1936, working at the bank's Ware branch. Outside work he was an enthusiastic stamp collector and also enjoyed sport, particularly tennis.

In October 1939 Darlow left the bank to go on war service, joining the army. He was soon recommended for officer training, and was gazetted in July 1940 as a Second Lieutenant in the Suffolk Regiment. He was later attached to the Cambridgeshire Regiment and promoted to Lieutenant. He was posted to the far east, where he was wounded and taken prisoner during the fall of Singapore.

Lieutenant Darlow died of malaria on 30 October 1943, when he was 24 years old, although news of his death was not received at home until 1945.
