Eric Norman Dowdy was born on 9 February 1922, the son of Samuel and Alice Gertrude Dowdy. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Derby Iron Gate branch in July 1939. A bank colleague later recalled, 'possessing a likeable personality, he displayed an ability which seemed to mark him out for a successful career in the bank.'

 

Dowdy was called up for military service in February 1942, becoming a Trooper in the Lothians & Border Horse, Royal Armoured Corps. He was killed in action in North Africa on 11 April 1943. He was 21 years old.

 

Eric Dowdy is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Derby St Peter's Street branch.
