Donald Leslie Davies was born on 27 March 1923, the son of Hilda and Lionel Seymour Davies. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its Farnham branch in November 1939.
He later left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was promoted to Sergeant in September 1943, and Flying Officer in March 1944. In August 1944 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. On 30 July 1944 he was part of the six-man crew of a Lancaster bomber which took off from RAF East Kirkby, Lincolnshire, and was believed to have subsequently crashed into the Wash with the loss of all on board. Flying Officer Davies was 21 years old.
