Archibald Gordon Douglas was born on 16 March 1917, the son of George and Elizabeth Sutherland Douglas. In June 1934, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Greenlaw branch.
In September 1939 Douglas left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. By 1943 he held the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He was killed in air operations over Germany on 7 September 1943. He was 26 years old and left a widow, Alexandra, whom he had married in 1942.
Archibald Douglas is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
