Alfred James Osborne Dempsey was born on 1 May 1916, the son of James and Jeanetta Steel Dempsey. In June 1934, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Haymarket branch.
In September 1939 Dempsey left the bank to go on military service, and by 1944 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed in action in Holland on 26 October 1944. He was 28 years old.
Alfred Dempsey is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
