Patrick Hector Conroy was born on 21 March 1916, the son of Arthur and Kathleen Conroy. He was educated at Ashburton Grammar School, Devon and Belmont Abbey School, Hereford. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Newton Abbot branch in February 1934. He was promoted to junior clerk in May 1934 and to clerk in July 1936.
Conroy had an interest in flying even before the war, and joined the Civil Air Guard at Exeter Airport. As soon as war broke out in September 1939 he volunteered for the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and was accepted around a year later. After training in South Africa he returned to England and was posted to Bomber Command as a navigator. Flying Officer Conroy was killed on a raid on Essen on 26 July 1943. He was 27 years old.
