Henry Chapman

Bank: Westminster Bank

Place of work: London Threadneedle Street office

Died: 29 May 1940

Henry James Chapman was born on 22 May 1900, the son of Emily Esther Chapman and Henry James Chapman, a stoker in the Royal Navy. Henry junior also spent a number of years working as a stoker in the Navy, but in June 1931 he joined the staff of Westminster Bank as an engineer's labourer, working at its London Threadneedle Street office.

At the outbreak of the Second World War Chapman returned to the Navy. He became a stoker on the crew of HMS Wakeful, which was sunk while taking part in the evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk on 29 May 1940. Stoker (First Class) Chapman, along with most of those on board - both crew and evacuated soldiers - was killed. He was 40 years old and left a widow, Lilian Kate, whom he had married in 1928.

Henry Chapman is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
