Gordon Dick Campbell Cumming was born in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, in 1911, the son of Andrew L Cumming and his wife Nancy. He was educated at Allan Glen's School, Glasgow, before going to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland. 

 

During the Second World War Cumming left his job at the bank's Giffnock branch to go on military service. He joined the Royal Artillery, serving in searchlight units in England, and by 1942 held the rank of Lieutenant. He died after a short illness on 30 June 1942. He was 31 years old and left a widow, Gladys, whom he had married in 1941.
