Geoffrey Childs was born on 30 May 1920, the son of Sarah Isabella and John Hughes Childs. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Grange branch in June 1936. He was promoted to clerk at Barrow branch in 1937 and moved to Dalton branch in 1938.

In August 1940 Childs left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Engineers. By summer 1943 he held the rank of Lieutenant and was attached to a bomb disposal unit in Wales. He was killed in an explosion on 23 August 1943. He was 23 years old.
