Douglas James Crombie was born in Glasgow on 2 February 1921, the son of Catherine and Eben Crombie. He worked for National Bank of Scotland at its Cardonald branch.

 

During the Second World War Crombie left the bank to join the Royal Navy. He was serving as an Ordinary Seaman on board HMS Prince of Wales when it was sunk during the Battle of Malaya on 10 December 1941, and was among 237 of its officers and crew who were killed. He was 20 years old.
