Douglas Howard Cook was born on 22 July 1920, the son of Albert and Elizabeth Cook. He was educated at Liverpool Collegiate School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Manchester Smithfield Market branch in February 1937 and was promoted to junior clerk in May 1937. He moved to Liverpool Victoria Street branch in June 1939 and was promoted to clerk in July 1939.
Outside work Cook was a Territorial soldier. He was mobilised for full time military service in August 1939, serving as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. He was commissioned early in 1943 and posted to Italy, where he was killed in action on 19 February 1944. Lieutenant Cook was 23 years old.
