Donald Nicolson Cochrane was born on 28 December 1914, the son of Mary Nicolson Cochrane and her husband Charles, who was a police officer. He joined the staff of National Bank of Scotland in May 1931 as an apprentice at its Carnoustie branch. He later worked in Dundee Chief Office.
Early in the Second World War Cochrane left the bank to go on war service as a Lieutenant in The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 18 May 1940. He was 25 years old.
Donald Cochrane is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
