David Hugh Cran was born in Dingwall in 1911, the son of John Cran and his wife Williamina. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its chief London office on Lombard Street. 

 

During the Second World War Cran left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Lieutenant in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He died in Italy on 19 January 1944. He was 32 years old and left a widow, Muriel, whom he had married in 1941.

 

David Cran is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh
