Anthony Robert Cotterell was born on 3 January 1920, the son of Thomas and Ethel Cotterell. He was educated at Haberdashers' Aske's School, Hampstead. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its London Golders Green branch in March 1938 and was promoted to junior clerk in June 1938.

 

In September 1939 Cotterell left the bank to go on war service in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flight Sergeant Cotterell was killed on 13 August 1941 when the Manchester he was flying was shot down and crashed at Lange Dijk near Kolham, Holland with the loss of all 6 crew. He was 21 years old.
