William Stewart Bruce was born on 18 January 1922, the son of James and Violet Mills Bruce of Edinburgh. In April 1939, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Leith branch.
In February 1942 Bruce left the bank to go on military service, becoming a navigator in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Bruce was killed in a plane crash following air operations over Berlin on 27 November 1943. He was 21 years old.
