Ronald Calder Brownie was born in about 1915, the son of Matthew Best Brownie, a shipwright, and his wife Bertha Constance Brownie. In Ronald's early childhood the family travelled around the world with Matthew, but when Ronald was 11 Bertha and the children settled in Crieff. They later moved to Leith.
Ronald was educated at Leith Academy. After leaving school in 1933 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland, initially at its Edinburgh Nicholson Street branch. He subsequently served at several branches in Edinburgh. In September 1939 he was transferred to Juniper Green branch.
In April 1940 Brownie left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He died in a flying accident on 15 May 1941. He was 25 years old.
Ronald Brownie is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
