Peter D’Arcy Burbidge was born on 12 February 1921, the son of Edward D’Arcy Burbidge and his wife Enid. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Bristol St George branch in October 1938.
On the outbreak of war Burbidge was mobilised with his Territorial battalion, the Royal Gloucester Hussars. He later transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps and served through much of the war, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He was among those who landed in France on D-Day.
Lieutenant Burbidge was killed in action in Normandy some weeks later, on 26 July 1944. He was 23 years old and was remembered by a bank colleague as 'a very likeable and high-spirited boy and popular both in the bank and in the Army'.
Peter Burbidge is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Kingswood Bristol branch.
