Leslie Baker was born on 2 July 1911, the son of William and Mabel Baker. He was educated at City of London School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Lewisham branch in October 1927. He was promoted to junior clerk in 1928 and to clerk in January 1930. He subsequently worked at London Cornhill, London Fleet Street and Exeter Bank branches before moving to Devonport branch in October 1939. 

 

Baker left the bank to go on war service in August 1940, joining the Royal Tank Regiment as a Trooper. Trooper Baker was killed in action at El Alamein on 27 October 1942. He was 31 years old.
