Leslie Albert Baker was born on 27 July 1913, the son of Albert Baker, a printer, and his wife Grace. He was educated at Rutlish School, where he excelled at rugby. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its London Lombard Street office in May 1933 and was transferred to Northcote Road branch in March 1937. Outside work he played for the bank's staff rugby team and was a member of a Territorial Army tank unit.

 

At the outbreak of war in 1939 Baker was mobilised for active service in the Royal Artillery. Over the next four years he spent time posted in India, Iraq and Sicily.

 

Lieutenant Baker was killed in action in Sicily on 12 July 1943, a couple of weeks before his 30th birthday. He left a widow, Daphne, whom he had married in the first months of war in 1939.
