John Henry Burton was born on 8 April 1900, the son of William and Elizabeth Burton. He was educated at Portsmouth Grammar School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a temporary clerk at Southsea branch in March 1916. He left the bank in March 1918 to go on war service, returning two years later. Over the next two decades he worked at the bank's Portsea, Bedminster, London City, Lancaster Gate, Bristol, Aston Gate and Bristol branches before moving to Clifton branch as accountant in March 1938.
In November 1939 Burton left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Captain Burton was killed on active service on 25 September 1940. He was 40 years old and left a widow, Dorothy, and a daughter.
