Henry Elliott Bayles was born on 27 February 1920, the son of Henry and Dora Bayles. He was educated at Barnard Castle School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Hartlepool branch in March 1938 and was promoted to junior clerk there in June 1938. He moved to West Hartlepool branch in July 1939 and to Stokesley branch in November 1939.
In May 1940 Bayles left the bank to go on war service, joining the the Royal Navy. By 1942 he was an Able Seaman on the crew of the destroyer HMS Kipling. Kipling was sunk during an operation in the Eastern Mediterranean on 11 May 1942; Able Seaman Bayles was one of more than 20 crewmen lost. He was 22 years old.
