Eric Norman Bird was born on 26 May 1923, the son of Frederic Arthur and Dorothy Maud Bird. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its Bromley branch in March 1940.
He later left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, training as an air bomber. Flight Sergeant Bird died on 26 July 1943, as part of the crew of a Stirling bomber which failed to return from a raid on Essen. He was 20 years old.
