Douglas Guthrie Beaton was born on 23 September 1915, the son of Guthrie and Phyllis Beaton. He was educated at Belmont College. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Croydon branch in September 1932. He was promoted to junior clerk in December 1932 and to clerk in January 1935. He moved to Sutton branch in July 1935 and to the Security department at Head Office in November 1938.
In June 1940, Beaton left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Tank Regiment. Trooper Beaton was killed in action in Libya on 8 July 1942. He was 26 years old.
