David Stuart Harold Bury was born on 7 January 1915, the son of Edmond and Ida Bury. He was educated at Eton College where he was head boy. He joined the staff of Glyn, Mills & Co in October 1937 at its head office in Lombard Street, London.

During the Second World War Bury left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flying Officer Bury was killed in action over France on 19 May 1940. He was 25 years old.
