Clifford Balderstone was born in Hardhorn, Lancashire, on 7 November 1919, the son of Robert and Hetty Balderstone. He joined the staff of District Bank as a clerk at its Kendal branch in February 1938 and moved to Garstang branch in November that year.
In April 1940 Balderstone left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Navy. On 26 September 1942 HMS Veteran, on which Balderstone was serving, was torpedoed in the Atlantic with the loss of all hands. Ordinary Telegraphist Balderstone was 22 years old.
