Charles Bethell

Charles Bethell was born in 1910, the son of George Bethell, a railway clerk, and his wife Hannah Jane. He had an older brother, Lloyd, and sister, Mary. In January 1928 he went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank. By September 1939, when he left the bank to go on military service, he was based at the bank's Sheffield branch. 

 

Bethell served in the army for more than two years, and by early 1942 was a Captain in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment). He was killed in action in Singapore on 15 February 1942. He was about 32 years old and left a widow, Betty Marguerite, whom he had married in 1940.

 

Charles Bethell is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Hardman Boulevard office, Manchester.
