William Francis Aspinall was born on 14 January 1919, the son of John Aspinall, a boot repairer, and his wife Emily. He had a younger sister, Kathleen. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in May 1936. In September 1937 he was posted to the bank’s Manchester branch, where he was known to his colleagues as Bill and liked for his ‘efficient and quiet manner’.
In October 1939 Aspinall left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Tank Regiment. After serving for some time in the UK he was posted to North Africa in March 1943. Lance Corporal Aspinall died in Tunisia just a few weeks later, on 21 April 1943. He was 24 years old.
William Aspinall is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Manchester City Centre branch.
