Reginald George Cecil Austin, known as Rex, was born on 16 September 1909, the son of George and Gertrude Austin. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank in 1926 at its London-based Overseas branch and transferred to Cambridge branch in 1931.

 

Austin joined the territorial army at the time of the Munich crisis in 1938. On the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 he was called up for full time military service with the Cambridgeshire Regiment. He was posted to the Far East in December 1941. He was captured at the Battle of Singapore in February 1942, becoming a prisoner of war. Sergeant Austin died while still a prisoner on 29 July 1943. He was 33 years old and left a widow, Winifred, whom he had married in 1933.
