John Critchley Arrowsmith was born on 4 October 1922, the son of Kenneth and Annie Arrowsmith. After leaving school he joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank in January 1940, when he was 17 years old. He worked at the bank's branch in Leigh, Lancashire.
He later left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Arrowsmith was killed on 12 November 1943, as part of the seven-man crew of a Halifax bomber on a mission to lay mines off the Frisian Islands. The plane was shot down, with the loss of all on board. Sergeant Arrowsmith was 21 years old.
John Arrowsmith is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Leigh branch.
