James Richard Branston Adams was born in May 1917, the son of Horace Edmund Adams and his wife Florence Adelaide. In June 1935, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland at its London Western branch.
In July 1940 he left the bank to go on military service, becoming a wireless operator and air gunner in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Adams was killed in action in air operations over Holland on 18 February 1942. He was 24 years old.
James Adams is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
