Frank Astles was born in Northwich, Cheshire, on 29 May 1908, the son of Charles Astles, a grocer, and his wife, Hannah. He joined the staff of Manchester & County Bank as a junior clerk at its Northwich branch in November 1925. In 1935 County Bank (as it had been known since 1934) was taken over by District Bank, and he became an employee of this bank. He worked at a number of branches including Warrington, Droylsden, several branches in Northwich and Liverpool Water Street between 1937 and 1939, before moving to Port Sunlight branch in January 1941.
In November 1941 Astles left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flying Officer Astles was killed in a car accident in Persia on 28 January 1943. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Winifred.
