Dennis Knox Atkinson was born on 20 May 1914, the son of Florence Annie and James Atkinson. He worked for Coutts & Co, London.

In August 1940 Atkinson left the bank to go on military service and was granted a direct commission in the Royal Air Force with the rank of Acting Pilot Officer. After training in the UK for 3 months he was drafted to Ismalia, Egypt and in November 1940 was promoted to Pilot Officer. He was employed on ground staff duties and served in Ismalia until his death on 17 May 1941. He was 26 years old and left a widow, Dorothy, whom he had married in 1939.
