David Hart Ayers was born on 25 February 1914 on the Isle of Wight, the son of Frank and Edith Ayers. He was educated at Kent College, Canterbury. He worked for National Provincial Bank at Herne Bay branch.
From 1937 Ayers was a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve from 1937, and at the outbreak of war in September 1939 he was called up for full time service. Sergeant Ayers was killed on 23 September 1940 when he baled out of his Spitfire into the sea south-east of Southwold. He was 26 years old.
