Hector John Yates was born in Congleton in 1892, the son of John Thomas Yates and his wife Elizabeth. He worked for Parr's Bank.
In November 1915 Yates left his job at the bank's Wigan branch to join the army, initially serving in the Royal Fusiliers and later in the Middlesex Regiment. Private Hector John Yates was killed in action in France on 26 September 1916. He was 24 years old.
Hector Yates is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Wigan branch.
