William John Peirce Woods was born in Northampton in 1896, the son of John Woods, a colliery agent, and his wife Gertrude Anne. In 1913 he went to work for Northamptonshire Union Bank.

 

In 1915 Woods left his job as a clerk at the bank's Kettering branch to join the army. Second Lieutenant William John Peirce Woods of the Suffolk Regiment was killed in action in France on 3 July 1916. He was 20 years old.

William Woods is commemorated on the Northampton war memorial and the Mash Valley memorial at Ovillers Military Cemetery, France.
