Walter Weir was born on 11 February 1882. In September 1897, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kirkintilloch branch. He moved to Fort William branch as a clerk in 1908 and to Clydebank branch as teller in September 1912.
During the First World War Weir left the bank to join the army, serving as a Private in the Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 31 July 1917. He was 35 years old.
Walter Weir is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
