Robert William Welch was born in Etwall, Derbyshire, in 1899, the son of Robert Arthur Welch, a farmer, and his wife Ann. From about 1915 he worked for Parr's Bank.
As soon as he was old enough, Welch left his job at the bank's Derby Midland Road branch to join the army. He was still in England as a Private in a Training Reserve Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) when he died of meningitis on 7 April 1917. He was 18 years old.
Robert Welch is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Derby St Peter's Street branch.
