Marshall Meredith Wilson was born in Penrith in 1896, the son of John Wright Wilson, an ironmonger, and his wife Margaret. He worked for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Wilson left his job at the bank's Carlisle branch to join the army, initially as a Private in the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps. He was commissioned into the Border Regiment, and by 1918 was a Lieutenant in the Border Regiment and the Royal Flying Corps. He was killed in a flying accident in Salonika on 29 January 1918. He was 21 years old.
