Leslie Collins Woodward was born on 3 June 1892, the son of George and Alice Woodward. In August 1907 he went to work for Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Banking Co.

During the First World War Woodward left his job in the bank's Nottingham branch to go on military service, and by 1918 he was a Major in the Royal Field Artillery. He died in France on 3 September 1918. He was 26 years old and left a widow, Annie, whom he had married in 1915.
