John Scott Wills was born on 30 September 1891, the son of George and Mary Wills. In July 1912 he went to work as a clerk for Bank of Whitehaven's agent in Aspatria, and in July 1913 he became an employee of the bank itself, at its Whitehaven branch. Following that bank's acquisition by Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co in 1916 he became an employee of the larger bank, and transferred to its Wigton branch.

 

In February 1917 Wills left the bank to go on military service, and by the following year he was a Second Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 4 September 1918. He was 26 years old.
