John Newton Williams was born on 14 September 1890. In January 1907, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Llangefni branch. He transferred to Bangor branch as a clerk in March 1911, and then to Wolverhampton branch in March 1912.
During the First World War Williams left the bank to join the army, and by 1919 he was a Corporal in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He died in Ireland on 19 April 1919 of pneumonia arising from influenza. He was 28 years old.
