James Reginald Ralph Wiles was born on 5 October 1896, the son of Henry Thomas Wiles, a surveyor to the Post Office, and his wife Louisa. He was educated at Portsmouth and Chichester Grammar Schools, and in July 1913 went to work for National Provincial Bank of England at its Newport, Isle of Wight branch.
During the First World War Wiles joined the army. Serjeant Wiles of the Royal Fusiliers was killed in action on the Somme on 15 September 1916. He was 19 years old.
