Harold Douglas Winter was born on 14 January 1899, the son of Louis Winter, a schoolmaster, and his wife Helen. He worked for Williams Deacon's Bank.
As soon as he turned 18 in January 1917 Winter left his job at the bank's St Helens branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Border Regiment. He was drafted to France in February 1918, and died there on 24 March 1918. He was 19 years old.
Harold Winter is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Hardman Boulevard office, Manchester.
