In June 1899, when he was 18 years old, Westby went to work for London & Westminster Bank as a teller at its London City office. He was promoted to clerk (4th class) at the same office in 1904. In 1909 London & Westminster Bank merged with London & County Bank, and Westby became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
