Francis Wood was born on 2 October 1885, the son of John Wood. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland, and from March 1913 was a clerk in its London office.
During the First World War Wood left the bank to join the army. Serjeant Francis Wood of The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) was killed in action on the Western Front on 24 March 1917. He was 31 years old and left a widow, Dorothy, whom he had married in 1915.
Francis Wood is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
