Sydney King Vernon was born in Congleton, Cheshire, in 1888, the son of George and Elizabeth Vernon. From about 1904 he worked for Parr's Bank.
During the First World War Vernon left his job at the bank's Bristol St George branch to join the army. By 1916 he was a Serjeant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was shot and killed by a German sniper on the Somme on 15 September 1916. He was 28 years old.
Sydney Vernon is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Kingswood Bristol branch.
