Leonard Patrick Vernon was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire, on 23 September 1894, the son of William and Elizabeth Vernon. In March 1911, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Manchester branch.
During the First World War Vernon left the bank to join the army. By 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and had been awarded the Military Cross for bravery in the field. He was killed in action in France on 18 June 1917. He was 22 years old.
