Robert William Taylor was born on 14 September 1893, the son of Robert and Jane Taylor. In June 1909, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Stromness branch. He became a clerk there in June 1912. In May 1913 he moved to Thurso branch.
During the First World War Taylor left the bank to go on military service. By 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery and had been awarded the Military Cross. He died on 24 October 1917 of wounds received in action on the Western Front. He was 24 years old.
Robert Taylor is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
