Oscar Roland Titherley was born in Exeter on 13 April 1893, the youngest son of Frank Titherley, a postmaster, and his wife Elizabeth. In June 1910, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Ipswich branch. He passed the final examinations of the Institute of Bankers in 1913 and transferred to the bank's Spalding branch as a clerk in March 1914.
In April 1915 Titherley left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private, and later an Acting Corporal, in the Royal Fusiliers. He was posted to the Balkans in December 1915. He later served in France, where he died on 27 May 1917 of wounds received in action four days earlier. He was 24 years old.
